In a repeat of the 2002 IC opening match the Northwind were facing the Irish national team. The Irish team worked hard to spoil and put pressure on the Canadian forwards. Both Jason Robinson and Mark Van Gelder had shots at goal under pressure early on but only managed behinds. Dave Tumber started things rolling late in the quarter with a solid hit near the mid field boundary, knocking both the Irish player and ball out of bounds. On the ensuing throw-in the tap was won by Chris Cunning and the ball move quickly into the forward pocket where Adrian Lagan gathered the loose ball and snapped a quick goal from 25m out to put Canada in front by 2.
Hard play continued through the second quarter as the Northwind defense can under pressure. The Irish used the wind to full advantage kicking long into the Canadian back line. The hard work by Sean Duffy, Darrell Smith and Stefan Leyhane spoiled many potential marks by the Irish, forcing them to kick on the run. Hard hitting by Dave Tumber and Chris Cunning allow the backs time to clear the ball. Both teams struggle for dominance in the third quarter with the Northwind controlling much of the play. They used the wind to keep the ball in the attacking zone but were unable to do much with it. It was Ireland that expanded upon their lead as they kicked three behind in quick succession mid way through the term. Canada regained the lead late after Rob McEwain delivered a devastating hit upon two Irish players simultaneously. Dale Simnett kicked Canada’s third goal from 50m out give the Northwind a 2 point lead going into the final quarter.
Once again both teams fought hard for dominance. The Northwind continued to punish the Irish player every time they went near the ball. The Irish spoiled every time a Northwind player went up for a mark. In the end Canada failed to capitalize on it’s opportunities and lost by 9 points.
