January 26th commemorates the day in 1788 on which Captain Arthur Phillip organised and officiated at the first ceremony of the new British colony then called New South Wales. Some refer to the day as "Survival Day", others as "Invasion Day", but most Aussies that I know just use Australia Day as another excuse to have some beers.
A couple of events around Toronto where you can celebrate the day:
- YACA's event at Hemingway's Pub on Thursday
- Etobicoke Kangaroos' Australia Day Party on Saturday
Feel free to comment with other events that you know about!
