OAFL Opens 20th Year With Preseason Tournament

April 29, 2008 by Danny Walker | View Comments (1)

On Saturday, May 3, the Ontario Australian Football League, OAFL, will celebrate its 20th year in Canada with a preseason tournament to be hosted at Humber College's North Campus, near the intersection of Highway 427 and Finch Avenue. The preseason tournament will encompass seven clubs from across Toronto plus teams from Hamilton and Guelph. The day will include 4 practice matches in the lead up to the exhibition match between Canada's National Australian Football Team, Northwind, and the OAFL All-Star team.

The Northwind team is made of the best Canadian-born players from across the country and this match will start its lead up to the International Cup this August. The International Cup, held in Melbourne, Australia, will be contested by several countries with some level of Australian football participation, except Australia itself. Northwind's opponent in this match will be an OAFL All-Star team, made up of the best ex-pat Australian players. This will be the first of three matches aimed at enhancing the skills and fitness of national team players.

The event is set to start at 10 AM and continue throughout the day with the main match between Northwind and the OAFL All-Stars starting at 2 PM. There will be a BBQ, refreshments, and prizes available to keep the crowd happy. Buzz Energy will be distributing free product to those in attendance.

This event will serve as the launch of OAFL's online show called Footy Feast. To help with this launch, the FAN 590 and a team of photographers will be on hand to add player interviews and filming of the action.

This event promises to be the biggest day of Australian Football in Ontario history!
